🍎 Our Apples
What We Grow
Hillcrest currently grows 20 varieties, some classic favorites and a bunch of exciting new offerings. As a research orchard for MAIA (Midwest Apple Improvement Association) we are constantly planting and evaluating new varieties to find your next favorite apple.
Sweet Maia (Pronounced Maya)New
Introduced commercially in 2020, this Midwest Apple Improvement Association (MAIA) offering is known for its extremely sweet flavor, incredibly juicy bite, and deep red color. One of the sweetest apples we grow at Hillcrest. It is ripe prior to pick-your-own season, so typically only available in the farm market. An excellent keeper, staying fresh in your fridge for 90 days or longer.
Gala
Originally developed in New Zealand in the 1930s, they are your lunchbox superhero. At Hillcrest we grow a variant called "Buckeye Gala" that was developed in the state of Ohio.
SummersetNew
This Midwest Apple Improvement Association (MAIA) discovery has an explosive crunch and sweet-tart flavor. A combination of Honeycrisp and Fuji, it has a more tangy flavor than either of its parent apples.
Amarilla SoulNew
This yellow apple is one of the newest offerings from the Midwest Apple Improvement Association (MAIA). Hillcrest was one of the original test orchards for this variety before it was decided to release it to other farms. This one is sure to be your new favorite yellow apple!
McIntosh
Discovered in Canada in 1811, this heirloom variety is an all-rounder known for its soft white flesh and sweet-tart flavor.
Pixie CrunchFavorite
Developed by the PRI (Purdue, Rutgers, and Illinois Universities) breeding program and released in 1993, this apple is already a favorite of many. Extremely crisp and juicy like a Honeycrisp, but not quite as sweet. Unlike the Honeycrisp, it keeps well in the fridge (up to 2 months).
HoneycrispFavorite
Developed by the University of Minnesota in the 1960s, this explosively juicy apple has become a favorite of many. At Hillcrest, we have over 3,200 Honeycrisp trees!
Red ZeppelinNew
This newly discovered variety (2017) is another descendant of the ever-popular Honeycrisp. Known for its exceptionally sweet flavor, crunch, and deep red color.
Red RushNew
This newly discovered variety is currently only being grown at Hillcrest! A very unique flavor that finishes with a hint of licorice.
Jonagold
Developed in the 1940s, this goldilocks of an apple is a cross between the sweet Golden Delicious and the tart Jonathan apples.
Golden Delicious
Discovered in West Virginia in 1905, this bright yellow apple is still an all-purpose favorite.
Autumn Crisp
This apple was developed by Cornell University and released in the early 2000s. Its non-browning flesh makes it an exceptional choice for charcuterie boards and salads.
ScruffyNew
A Midwest Apple Improvement Association (MAIA) discovery in Ohio in 2019, Scruffy has a unique look that inspired its name. Despite the look, this apple will be your new favorite due to its firm texture and perfect balance of sweet and tart. Hillcrest is the only Cleveland orchard to grow this new variety!
RosaleeFavorite
Introduced in 2017 by the Midwest Apple Improvement Association (MAIA), this cross between Honeycrisp and Fuji is already a favorite of many.
EverCrispFavorite
The first apple released by the Midwest Apple Improvement Association (MAIA) in 2014, a Honeycrisp and Fuji combo that keeps extraordinarily well (it's "ever crisp" 😆). A much harder apple than Honeycrisp, but still retaining that explosive crunch and juiciness you know and love.
LudacrispFavorite
This apple was discovered in Ohio in 2019 and is known for its tropical taste. (Testing revealed it contains some of the same flavor compounds as pineapples, grapes, and strawberries!)
Melrose
Developed in 1944 in Wooster, Ohio, this Jonathan and Red Delicious combo has since become the state apple of Ohio.
Sweet ZingerNew
Released in 2018 by the Midwest Apple Improvement Association (MAIA), this offspring of the Goldrush and Sweet 16 apples has an excellent honey-citrus flavor that starts off sweet and finishes with a tangy tartness. Another excellent keeper, this one is sure to last in your fridge well into winter.
Granny Smith
Discovered in Australia in 1868 by Mary Ann "Granny" Smith. Still wildly popular to this day, it is known for its intense tart flavor.
Winesap
This classic 18th-century heirloom variety has a wildly unique spicy-tart flavor and a purple-ish hue.
